Winter is such a lovely time of the year, at least for me it is. Though we don’t have much to do in terms of winter activities like in other states, I still very much enjoy winter time. In terms of my favorite seasons it’s probably second, right behind spring. As for why I love winter so much, there are a multitude of reasons.
For one, there is its color palette. My personal favorite color is blue so it makes sense as for why I would love the color palette for winter. A good bit of its color palette is made up by a mixture of different variations of blue.
Another thing that I love about winter is the snow. I mean sure, in Louisiana snow is practically myth, but that doesn’t change the fact that I like snow. Snowy themes are always just very pretty to me and give off this sense of calmness. In my time of living it has really only snowed once here and I remember having so much fun playing out in the snow, so it’s really sad that it is such a rare experience down here in Louisiana.
There are also the foods that come alongside the winter time. Each season typically has their own sort of foods that come with them. For example, I would attribute turkey in the fall, simpler foods and fruits in the spring, burgers and crawfish in the summer, and then lastly for the winter it would be stuff like hot cocoa and cookies. Now these more so fall to Christmas, but I feel like many Christmas foods can be applied as kind of standards for winter foods.
Christmas and winter are interchangeable in a sense. Especially if you take into fact how most Christmas songs not based around Santa or presents, tend to be based around the winter time and the snow. Christmas is probably one of my favorite holidays alongside Halloween so the connection between Christmas and the winter also probably helps to back up my love for the season.
Lastly there is the coldness of winter. Now don’t get me wrong, the cold is not really all the fun. What I mean is more so is that I enjoy the feeling of warmth that follows the cold. To me, there is nothing nice then walking out of the freezing cold and just turning the heater on and just relaxing.
The cold in a sense gives a new feeling to the warmth. It’s not like it’s something you can really do during other seasons. Fall is a possibility, but in Louisiana the fall isn’t always typically cold. As for the spring and summer, you definitely could turn the heater on and snuggle yourself inside a blanket, but that is not really all that comfortable. Especially during the summertime. Doing that in the summertime is almost psychotic, especially with how hot it gets in Louisiana.
Despite how much I love the winter time though, there is just one main problem that I have with it that prevents it from being one of my favorite holidays. That being how cold it gets outside. Now sure I did say that I loved it early, but that applies more to the feeling of warmth after you escape the cold. Actually being in the freezing cold is a whole other story.
The cold used to not be as much of a problem to me in the past as it is now. Recently winter down here has been colder than ever before, at least in my lifetime, reaching temperatures in the 40’s almost consistently.
I’m sure most people would agree with me when I say this, but walking outside in 40 degree weather is not fun in the slightest. Especially for art students, like myself who live in the dorms and have to walk to the opposite side of campus to get to our classes.
The best way to combat these temperatures is to wear either a hoodie or a sweater of some kind, just as long as they aren’t thin as then they probably won’t do much of a job protecting you from the cold. Pants and even gloves would be recommended as well. I can’t even begin to count the amount of times I have walked to class and by the time I got there my hands felt colder than ice.
There is just one problem with this though, and I would attribute this to being a mainly Louisiana thing. If there was one thing that I have come to know about this state it is that we have the most indecisive and inconsistent weather and temperatures ever.
For one minute you could be walking out in the freezing cold, and then just an hour or two later it would suddenly be warm outside. Now all those layers of clothing that you wore to protect from the cold are now smothering you to death as a result of the sudden shift in temperature. In this situation, there is not much you can really do to prepare for this beforehand.
Despite all of this though, I still love the winter time. Even with how painful it can be sometimes. In my opinion it will always be one of the most wonderful seasons of all.
