Izumi Ramen, located at 2201 Kaliste Saloom Rd #1b in Lafayette, is a local gem specializing in hearty ramen bowls with an expanded menu that includes small plates, katsu curry and more. Walking into Izumi Ramen, you’re met with a dimly lit atmosphere that feels both cozy and lively. The space was bustling with patrons when we arrived, creating an inviting ambiance that suited the chilly day.

We started with the Takoyaki, priced at $8. This traditional Japanese small plate consists of a wheat flour-based batter filled with tender octopus, which is then deep-fried to a golden brown. It’s drizzled with homemade sauce and topped with bonito flakes, lending a unique twist with each bite.

The Takoyaki had a soft exterior, which gave way to a slightly chewy texture thanks to the octopus center. The bonito flakes, typically made from dried tuna, added an intriguing flavor that tasted more like dried octopus to me—probably due to their earthy, umami profile.

For my entrée, I got my usual, which is the Flaming Tonkotsu, one of Izumi’s signature dishes, for $15. This ramen is built on a rich, creamy pork broth with a medium spice level that’s both flavorful and aromatic.

Alongside the tender pork belly slices, the bowl includes a mix of fresh toppings like scallions, nori, a seasoned soft-boiled egg, wood ear mushrooms, corn and bean sprouts, all complemented by wavy noodles. The broth was deliciously well-seasoned and had a deep, comforting flavor that lingered. Although the spice level was noticeable, it was just enough to be invigorating without overwhelming the palate.

Next up was the Chicken Katsu Curry. For $14, this dish features a crispy, deep-fried chicken cutlet draped in a homemade Japanese curry sauce, served over a bed of rice. I ordered a side of katsu sauce, which added $0.99 to the total. The katsu sauce had a tangy, soy-based flavor that reminded me of eel sauce. It paired well with the chicken cutlet, adding a subtle sweetness and tanginess that complemented the curry’s warmth.

Throughout our meal, I was impressed by the attentiveness of the staff, despite there being only two waiters covering the busy dining room. Our server was friendly, checked on us frequently, and ensured we had everything we needed, which enhanced our overall experience.

One highlight at Izumi Ramen is their Devil Bowl Challenge. This challenge, available for dine-in customers only, requires signing a waiver due to its extreme spice level. The Devil Bowl contains a spicy miso broth filled with chili peppers, spicy pork belly, corn, a soft-boiled egg and wavy ramen noodles. The challenge is to finish the entire bowl within a certain time frame, and if you succeed, your meal is free.

Otherwise, the bowl is priced at $18. One of my friends recently took on the Devil Bowl Challenge and managed to finish it, winning a free T-shirt. Watching him eat, I could almost feel the heat wafting from his bowl—it’s definitely not for the faint-hearted!

Izumi Ramen’s pricing is another reason why it’s become a favorite in the Lafayette community. Their menu ranges from $5 to $21, making it affordable for students, families and food lovers alike. Given the quality and portions, I’d say it’s a good deal. The variety on the menu, from ramen to curry to small plates, offers something for everyone.

Izumi Ramen’s location and hours are convenient, too. They’re open from 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. This makes it an ideal spot for a weekday lunch or a weekend dinner outing.

After finishing a warm, savory meal at Izumi Ramen, you don’t have to go far to satisfy your sweet cravings. Located conveniently in the same shopping center, Nothing Bundt Cakes offers a range of rich, moist bundt cakes in flavors like Red Velvet and Lemon, perfect for a sweet treat.

If you’re after something lighter, Playa Bowls serves refreshing açaí bowls, smoothies and juices, featuring fresh fruits and vibrant flavors. These dessert options provide the perfect way to round out your meal at Izumi Ramen.

Personally, Izumi Ramen has become my go-to place when I crave something hot and hearty. Their flavorful ramen and cozy ambiance are perfect for cooler days when you want to switch it up from the usual gumbo. The dining experience here feels authentic, and the food hits just the right spot. It’s a satisfying alternative when you’re looking for a change, offering the warmth and comfort of Japanese flavors in the heart of Lafayette.
